Case Study: How attitude improved single issue app sales

Top Tip: Run an in-app single issue promotion during the last weekend of sale

Attitude magazine ran an in-app single issue promotion during the last weekend of sale of their April issue, in order to intensify sales that had dipped due to it being the end of an issue’s cycle.  Attitude’s first 2013 style issue (featuring actor James Franco) was reduced to half price or £1.99 for 48hours over the weekend before the new issue was due to be released.

The offer was promoted effectively using the below channels:

Social Media

Make sure you advertise your digital offers on Facebook, twitter and other social forums as social media is a great way of spreading the word quickly and easily with fans and followers. Not to mention social reach can have huge rewards if your offer is shared with others.

Send email newsletters to your magazine’s long list promoting the offer on your digital edition. Alternatively cross promote your offers with other newsletters using banners with a direct link to your magazines special offer’s landing page.

Push notifications and in-app messages

Push notifications are an easy way to target Apple readers who have downloaded your app. Attitude regularly sends push notifications to inform readers when the new issue is out as well as to promote special offers.

In-app messages are also an effective way of targeting loyal and active digital readers as they reach all users as soon as they open the app.

In-app banners and web advertising

In-app banners sit at the bottom of an opened app and are visible by all. Therefore, this is a valuable place to advertise in-app special offers as the app user will be more likely to purchase. Alternatively, target a wider audience who may be new to digital reading by placing banners advertising a trial offer on your website, with a link to your offer in-app (via the app store) or online (via your Pocketmags landing page).

The Results

As demonstrated by the graph below Attitude’s single issue sales increased dramatically over the weekend compared to the last five issues last weekend on sale stats, in some cases increasing by over 400%,

MagazineCloner brings ‘Custom Edition’ to Kindle Fire and Android

As tablet sales and digital edition revenues continue to grow, publishers have increasingly looked to experiment with enhancements and additional multimedia on their replica editions and are more regularly turning to bespoke, separately designed, digital editions, whether on a one off or monthly basis.

MagazineCloner’s Custom Edition software was first developed to help publishers create market-leading ‘made for iPad’ digital editions with none of the prohibitive license, upload, download and creation costs of the existing bespoke app solutions which were on the market. The custom build technology was first utilised by attitude magazine and achieved immediate success, with a 27% increase in subscription conversion rates and becoming a regular Top Grossing title on Apple Newsstand. PPA-nominated, Attitude’s digital edition continues to go from strength to strength, regularly delivering over 10,000 issues each month.

With the growth of other platforms, including the success of Kindle Fire since Christmas, MagazineCloner have sought to extend the immersive reading experience which custom editions bring and are delighted to announce the imminent launch of custom edition capability on Kindle Fire HD and Android tablets. Apps will be served by the same content as the iPad custom edition so the extension of the custom offering will incur no additional workload, much to the relief of designers! The update is part of the new 4.9 app which entails numerous other improvements, including print/ digital bundle activation, ‘more from this publisher’ cross-promotion and a slicker, more user-friendly interface

The new Custom Tablet Edition will have all of the same benefits of MagazineCloner’s iPad Custom Edition Software, with the same multimedia capabilities including video covers, iframes, image galleries, 360 degree product rotations, video/ animation and hotspots. In addition to the Custom Tablet Edition, readers will also be able to download the normal Print Edition, allowing users to choose between both editions as per their preference and in the case that users prefer the replica on smaller screens, such as 7” tablets.

MagazineCloner’s Custom Tablet Edition will be available on any digital device that is 7” and larger.  It can be used on a one off or regular basis and is available to all clients at no additional cost, allowing publishers to experiment with one-off editions such as bookazines and digital one-shots.

The Custom Edition is currently used by top sellers including Attitude, Boxing News US, Singletrack Magazine, That’s Awesome magazine and Los Sims Revista Oficial.

Pocketmags sells first print subscriptions, increasing publishers’ online revenues further

MagazineCloner’s newsstand trialled its first print subscription on the site in mid-December, selling 59 attitude subscriptions in 2 weeks.

Amongst a number of major new developments on the relaunched, MagazineCloner trialled the sale of print subscriptions on the site for the first time. Functioning in the same way as lead-generation subscription sites such as iSubscribe, from February onwards opted-in titles on Pocketmags can sell both print and digital subscriptions from their title page on the rapidly growing website. Purchases made on the Pocketmags site are passed on to the publisher or subscription house who fulfils the subscription as normal and a ‘finder’s fee’/ commission is deducted from monthly earnings.

The first title to offer print subscriptions was one of Pocketmags’ largest digital sellers; the gay lifestyle title attitude. The trial addition to the site was not promoted, simply a ‘print’ tab was added next to the digital subscription purchase options on the magazine’s title page. In the first 2 weeks offering subscriptions on the site the title sold 59 print subscriptions, as gifts and personal purchases.

The number of print titles available on the site is now increasing after the successful trial and a ‘Recommended print subscriptions’ panel is apparent on the Pocketmags homepage, with more dedicated areas and coverage to come from February.

As well as more than £2500 in additional print subscription revenue for attitude, the title’s updated app (on the new v4.9 of the MagazineCloner iOS build) launched on December 20th sending conversion rates and digital revenues soaring. Since the latest issue went on sale on 4th January first week digital sales have been up 162% on the equivalent period in December, and 224% and 107% on November and October respectively, ensuring a fantastic start to 2013 for Europe’s No .1 Gay lifestyle title.
